Artist's Statement
Icatherine headshot-3 make abstract art. Piecing techniques of quilt construction are the medium I use to express graphic impressions of my world. My work is intuitive and spontaneous relying on color, line and rhythm. The combination of these weaves patterns that become a scaffold upon which I explore my world. Both natural and man-made items such as a line of telephone poles, a farmers field, trees planted in a row, or leaves catching the light serve as inspiration.

I begin the process with something I have seen around me. After identifying the colors for the piece, I work directly on the design wall cutting the fabrics. Rarely do I sketch, instead I just combine the colors in ways that evoke the original idea.

Heavy quilting adds texture to the design. This brings another layer to the pieces. The entire process is exciting. Until the piece is complete, I am not positive of the outcome.

Garden inspirationHome has always been the Pacific Northwest which has been a constant source of wonder. Catherine’s home and studio are in the midst of a forest. This environment provides Catherine with a wealth of ideas. Although she has always been moved by her surroundings, it wasn’t until 2007 that her artistic expressions of nature and the world around her became a passion.

Catherine is a self taught artist. She has pursued instruction in classic artist principles by studying with Nancy Crow and Rosalie Dace. She now devotes herself to full time studio art. She is a member of High Fiber Diet, Columbia Fiberart Guild, and SAQA. She has been juried into national and international fiber art shows.
